Fighting off the clouds of Scottish midges alongside the clouds of keen photographers hoping to catch the ‘Flying Scotsman’ steam past between Alloa and Stirling. A pair of wellies and wade out into the River Devon meant I managed to keep the people out of the shot, but it’s taken a bit of work with the healing tools in Photoshop to clear the midges. An impressive sight all the same.
Making sure everything is set up for the shot - camera sheltered from the drizzle and plenty of test shots in preparation. Tricky exposure with the bright sky/dark landscape so used a 0.9/3Stop ND Grad filter to keep the sky in check. Shot in Shutter Priority mode (a normal service train had just passed so had a good idea of the shutter speed that could be used to freeze the action) with auto ISO. Fired off a burst of images as the train passed through the scene, selecting the best composition for the edit above.
